As a business owner, there are many benefits of doing volunteer work. Some people volunteer out of deeply held ethical or religious beliefs. Others volunteer because it can be fun and enlightening. Some people even volunteer to make connections, professional or personal.

Understanding what your personal reasons are for volunteering can help you find a volunteer opportunity that is profitable for both those you’re helping and you personally, or professionally. If your primary goal is to meet professional requirements or build your client base or portfolio, then volunteering within your industry is a great idea. It may lead to great networking and possible business. If your primary goal in volunteering is to try something new, get a fresh perspective, or meet new people on a personal level, then you might want to volunteer doing something completely different from your profession.

Before you begin a volunteer opportunity, make sure to research the organization thoroughly to understand their motives and spending practices. Also make sure to examine your own motives to find the cause that best fits your interests!

Below are a few great volunteer opportunities in the Houston area:

1) Big Brothers Big Sisters- “For over a century, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been helping change kids' perspectives and their lives by providing them the opportunity to reach their potential. We have over a century of volunteers, donors, and advocates just like you to thank”.

2) Houston Food Bank- “Your time is a gift to hungry kids, seniors and others who may not have enough to eat. Volunteers produce the equivalent of a meal a minute while helping the Houston Food Bank sort, process and pack food. And it's fun! You can volunteer in our big warehouse or help prepare meals for kids in our Keegan Kitchen at 535 Portwall”.

3) American Cancer Society- “As an American Cancer Society volunteer you can honor a survivor or a loved one lost to cancer, help save lives of people in your local community, and around the world. It only takes a little time to do a lot of good. Discover how rewarding it is to be a volunteer”.

4) CAP Houston- “CAP staff spends each day providing quality care for every animal that comes to our shelter, but these days can be long and overwhelming. Volunteers are invaluable to the animals and the shelter staff as they give their time walking dogs, washing dishes, doing laundry, cleaning kennels, and other tasks that help create a happy, healthy environment for the animals”.
